Smoke Detector

An RV smoke detector is a specialized safety device designed to withstand road vibrations and be sensitive to the types of fires common in an RV, such as cooking-related or electrical fires.
 
Maintenance

• Regular testing: Test the detector before every trip, then monthly, and after any absence of more than a few days.
• Battery replacement: Change batteries when they are low, indicated by a chirping sound.
• Replacement schedule: Smoke detectors have a limited lifespan and should be replaced every 5 to 10 years. Check the manufacture date on the back of the unit.
• Cleaning: Clean the detector to prevent dust buildup, which can cause false alarms. 

Fire Extinguisher Location 

Fire extinguishers are usually located by the main entrance door.

Maintenance
Functionality: Regularly check that the extinguisher is fully charged, with the needle on the gauge in the green zone.

• Monthly check: Inspect the pressure gauge and shake and turn the extinguisher upside down to dislodge any compacted dry chemical inside.
• Lifespan: Fire extinguishers typically have a lifespan of 5 to 15 years, depending on the type and usage, so check the expiration date.
• Service: Have it refilled or replaced if it is partially discharged or expired. 

Carbon Monoxide Detector/Propane Detector

RV carbon monoxide (CO) and propane (LP) detectors are safety devices that monitor for leaks of both gases. These 12V hardwired units combine two alarms into one compact device, providing a loud alarm and flashing lights when dangerous levels are detected. Proper installation is crucial, and the detectors should be placed near the floor for propane and should not be obstructed by furniture or drafts. These units have a limited lifespan and must be replaced every five years to ensure they are functioning correctly, as a malfunctioning detector may make a beeping sound. 

What they do

• Detects two gases: These devices have sensors for both carbon monoxide (produced by fuel-burning appliances) and propane (LP) gas leaks.
• Provides an alarm: When a leak is detected, the unit will sound a loud alarm and flash warning lights to alert occupants.
• Combines alarms: Unlike standard CO detectors, a combo unit is necessary for RVs because a CO detector alone will not detect a propane leak. 

The propane/carbon monoxide detector is hardwired to your house batteries. If your house battery voltage drops it will trigger an alarm on your propane detector in the form of an intermittent beeping. Make sure you charge these batteries before you go camping to avoid this.

If a gas leak is detected your alarm will sound in a rapid steady beeping alarm. If this happens, immediately get out of the coach and turn the propane off at the source. You will need to then open all doors and windows to air any latent fumes out of the coach. Hold the button on the detector down and it will reset itself in approximately 30 seconds. if the alarm goes off again, keep the propane off and contact your service department so they can perform leak testing on their propane systems.
 

Emergency Exits and RV Egress Windows

RV egress windows must be easily openable by hand from the inside, have a clear "EXIT" sign, and be a minimum size of 24 inches wide by 17 inches high. They must be large enough for a person to fit through and are required in RVs by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1192 standard. 

Know the location of the emergency exits and understand how these emergency exits operate. Note that these windows are often located high off the ground and extreme caution should be exercised in the event you need to exit the vehicle through an egress window.
 

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Blowouts are one of the leading causes of RV accidents. A TPMS alerts you to low pressure or overheating tires before disaster strikes.

Check tire pressure manually before every trip.

First Aid Kit

Accidents happen, even on the safest trips.

Stock a kit with bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, and any personal medications. Keep it accessible and check supplies regularly.

Surge Protector

Electrical surges can damage your RV’s systems and create fire hazards. Use a surge protector when connecting to campground power.

Consider an EMS (Electrical Management System) for added protection.

Backup Camera

Visibility is limited in large RVs.

A backup camera helps prevent collisions when reversing. Pair it with side-view cameras for extra safety.

Roadside Emergency Kit

Be prepared for breakdowns or emergencies. Include flares, reflective triangles, jumper cables, and basic tools.

Store it in an easy-to-reach compartment.

Best Safety Practices

• If you exit the vehicle and turn of the “battery disconnect,” always turn off the exterior propane bottle at its source. 
• If you smell gas even if a detector is not triggered. Turn off the propane and do not use it until it has been inspected by a certified RV technician.
• Do not use any supplemental heating devices like electric floorboard heaters or radiant heaters like “Mr. Heater Buddy.” 
• Check the batteries in your smoke detector and change all safety devices at their time of expiration.
