British Columbia

If you look at a map of Canada, you’ll find British Columbia on the far left – it’s the westernmost province in Canada, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains. Population-wise, it is Canada’s third largest province, being home to an estimated 5 million people.

European settlement in the province began in the first half of the 1800s with the settlement of Fort Victoria in 1843, giving rise to the City of Victoria. In 1866, the original Colony of Vancouver Island became part of the colony of British Columbia with Victoria remaining the capital. British Columbia became Canada’s 6th province in 1871.

Weather-wise, the coastal regions of British Columbia have a climate suitable to explore year-round. While Northern BC may experience heavy snowfalls, winters on the Coast are temperate. If snow does fall in Vancouver or around the southern parts of Vancouver Island, it doesn’t stay around long. This makes Vancouver Island a great choice for a holiday in the winter months. In the southern interior and southwestern BC, spring and fall offer mild temperatures and it’s a popular time to explore outside of the peak travel months of July and August. Summers are hottest in the BC interior – in the Okanagan region in particular.
