Sports fishermen began travelling to the area as early as the 1880s and today avid fishermen still flock here in pursuit of the many salmon species populating the waters, the most sought-after being Chinook.

Lying at the southern end of Discovery Passage, Campbell River marks the boundary between the developed south and the wild north.
