Pick up your RV in Alberta’s capital city and get ready for an unforgettable northern adventure. Spend the day exploring Edmonton’s scenic river valley, cultural districts, and urban green spaces. Whether you’re enjoying the lively downtown or unwinding in one of the many nearby parks, there’s plenty to do before hitting the road.

Leaving Edmonton, travel northwest on Highway 16 before connecting to Highway 43 at the town of Spruce Grove. Continue on Highway 43 through the communities of Whitecourt and Valleyview, where you’ll then turn north onto Highway 49. At Rycroft, switch to Highway 2, which takes you straight into the Peace River valley. 

Travel north through picturesque farmland and gentle, rolling hills as you make your way toward Peace River. Along the way, take in the charm of Alberta’s francophone communities, where history and heritage shape the landscape. This scenic drive offers a peaceful introduction to life in the north, where prairie meets forest and tradition runs deep.

From Peace River, take Highway 2 south through the farming community of Nampa and continue past forests and open fields toward the town of High Prairie. From there, follow Highway 2 east along the northern edge of Lesser Slave Lake, arriving at your lakeside destination.

Begin your journey southeast toward Elk Island National Park – approximately 350 km (about 4 to 4.5 hours) depending on your starting point around Lesser Slave Lake. Travel east along Highway 2 through Slave Lake, then head south on Highway 44 toward Westlock. From there, continue south until you reach Highway 16 (Yellowhead Highway), where you’ll turn east toward Elk Island National Park. 

This scenic route takes you from boreal forest back toward prairie grasslands. Take your time and enjoy the changing landscapes as you make your way into the heart of bison country. 

 

Spend the day surrounded by the beauty of Canada’s only fully fenced national park. With its tranquil lakes, wide range of wildlife, and peaceful picnic spots, Elk Island offers a serene experience. Watch for roaming bison, paddle the calm waters, engage in bird watching, or stretch your legs on one of the many scenic trails.
